WHEELS AND A TRIP TO L'AQUILA, AMONG OTHER THINGS

Dear Family and Friends,

Just looking at the last date I "reported"--2 weeks sure seemed to go FAST!  We did FINALLY get our own vehicle and it has been wonderful!!  We met President Toronto outside the Temple about 2 weeks ago and there were 2 vehicles we had a choice between. We were so happy--we didn't care if it was white, red (well, maybe) blue, green or what. We chose between a silver grey or blue--and took the grey one. We are so excited to have our own wheels. No more coordinating schedules, drive in, pick-up times and the like. We were so excited--we had talked about going up to L'Aquila--so that weekend, Sunday morning (March 12th) we got up early and headed out for this little community. Here's some background about it:

L'Aquila is a beautiful city in the Abruzzo region. It is also a famous university center and has become very famous for the earthquake that recently destroyed many parts of the city.

It was 2009–April 6–when the magnitude-6.3 tremor struck at 3:32 AM local time, extensively damaging the 13th-century city of L’Aquila, located only about 60 miles (100 km) northeast of Rome. The earthquake resulted from normal faulting on the northwest-southeast-trending Paganica Fault. It and several neighbouring faults are related to extensional tectonic forces associated with the opening of the Tyrrhenian Basin to the west. For more than three months after the main earthquake, the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, using a portable network of seismometers, continued to detect thousands of aftershocks. The aftershocks from the country’s worst earthquake in 30 years rippled through central Italy, fraying both public and political nerves. People were so afraid that those aftershocks were indicative of another big quake!! In all, more than 300 people died, and an estimated 60,000 were left homeless.

Twenty of the 309 victims were children. In addition, around 40,000 people were made homeless. The European Union estimated the total damage caused by the earthquake was US$16 billion. L'Aquila's historic buildings were severely damaged, resulting in most inhabitants abandoning their homes and the city. The timing of the quake—being the wee hours of the morning—prevented thousands of more injuries and even deaths—as these buildings would have been overflowing with people who either worked there and/or came to do government tasks there.

We were visiting with the Diodato family, who are members of the Church and live in L’Aquila. In fact, they are one of the reasons we went to visit that Sunday. Fratello Bruno Diodato is the Branch President of this little Branch in L’Aquila. I had first met them in the Temple quite soon after we arrived and began serving in the Temple. It was a day in December 2022 when I saw Fratello and Sorella Diodato waiting to visit a Member of the Temple Presidency—it may have even been President Toronto himself. Both of them were so excited for their son, Marco, who was with them, to be called as a Temple worker—a special temple worker. You see, Marco has a form of autism and will not be able to serve a regular mission. But with his parents help, he can be a Church Service Missionary. And so he comes to the Temple every 2-3 weeks (usually with his father) and they serve for 1-3 days doing those things that Anziano Marco Diodato is capable of doing. I wish you could see them! They are so happy for him to have this opportunity to serve. Talk about a sacrifice of time and effort—and yet there is not an ounce of self-pity or complaint in the way they have embraced this way of service opportunity for him. What makes this story even sweeter, to me, is that the name, Diodato, means “God given”.  Anziano Marco Diodato is a “gift” his mother said to me on that Sunday we visited L’Aquila and “we want him to have as many opportunities to experience life, friendship, service and many other things that he can while he is able”—as she reaches up to give him a little smooch on the cheek. Which he’s not crazy about, btw.

So we made our way to this city of roughly 70,000 and we’re poised to be on time for Sacrament Meeting when we parked our car and began looking for “the building”. Maps had gotten us there—but COULD NOT get us there—if you know what I mean. We walked in every direction possible, asked any who would stop and listen to our queries. Finally, we found it and they waited for us to come in so they could begin Sunday School ( we had missed all of Sacrament Mtg “looking”).  There were 11 of us there—that including the teacher and the 2 Anziano assigned to that area and Anziano Diodato who serves with them on Sundays and other special times when he can be of help.  The class was beautiful, one of the Elders translated for me and it was a special time. Then after, Sorella Diodato came back into the room to share some snacks and visit with us. Fratello Diodato asked if we’d like to partake of the Sacrament and authorized the 2 Full Time Elders to bless and pass it to us. What a spiritual experience that was!! That was the very thing I had felt the most sad about —not finding the building in time to receive the sacrament—and then we did!! After, the Diodato’s knew of our interest in the earthquake and offered to guide us up to the City Center and walk around. It was a beautiful spring day and so lovely out. They showed us the building where the Government records were kept. It had suffered terrible damage.

And this is where I want Ron to explain the significance to the Church and the aftermath of this Quake.

This is from Anziano Mumford about the L'Aquila Earthquake

Several months after this quake (in 2009) I had a conversation with Clair Davis, a good friend from Clifton Idaho. He had served in the Salt Lake City, Headquarters Mission, at the time or shortly after the quake. He said he believed that this earthquake was the reason, or, a major reason, for the Italian government to reach an agreement with the Church, for Italy’s vital records to be digitized, preserved, indexed and made available throughout the world.

I wanted to learn the details but could not find anyone who could substantiate or refute this.

Shortly after we began our mission here in Italy, I was introduced to Bruno Diodato and his son, Elder Marco Diodato.

As Carol has already mentioned, Bruno is the President of the L’Aquila Branch, and Elder Marco is a Service Missionary from L’Aquila. Marco’s mission includes service every 2-3 weeks in the Rome Italy Temple. Needless to say, I was excited to talk with them.

Before they left, I asked President Diodato about the earthquake and how it might have contributed to Italian vital records being available. He didn’t know the details about the Church’s agreement with Italy, but did confirm that the archive in which the records were kept was almost completely destroyed. He invited me to come and see. It’s about an hour drive for Rome.

I had also raised this subject with our Temple President, James Toronto. He authored “Mormons in the Piazza” - a history of the Church in Italy. He did not have any details on this particular subject but suggested I speak with Walter Zafarana, a native Italian and the Strategic Relations Manager for FamilySearch in Italy. Here’s what he shared:

From previous efforts or from individual requests to obtain records - at the time of the earthquake - the Church had been able to digitize about 3 million vital Italian records that included some L’Aquila records.

FamilySearch had had many discussions with the Italian Minister of Culture, asking to digitize all records throughout Italy. These discussions had gone on for about seven years - but no agreement had been reached.

FamilySearch had offered - without cost to Italy - to photograph and digitize all records, index these records so they could be searched by date, place, name, etc - anywhere in the world - and provide a copy of these records to the Italian government, and a copy would be retained by the Church. At the time of the earthquake nothing had been finalized.

When the earthquake occurred it was thought that most of the L’Aquila records had been lost. (It was later found that the records had been smashed but most were still useable.)

After the earthquake the Church provided the Italian Minister with a copy of records it had, including some from L’Aquila. This offer was appreciated and received. The Minister, seeing what happened in L’Aquila, and reviewing the records held by the Church agreed to accept the Church’s offer and the agreement, was signed about a year later - 9 years before the Rome Italy Temple would be dedicated so that members in Italy, and throughout the world could find and perform temple ordinance work for their ancestors.

When Carol and I were serving in the Church History library in 2017 - in part because of the agreement - about 700,000 Italian records were being indexed and made available per year. I trust that number has increased since then.

Pondering this experience, I believe the Lord often uses a tragedy or trial to bring about His work, and for His hand to be manifested:

The storms in the early winter of 1846 revealed the hearts of handcart pioneers, who “came to know God”. Their examples have served as a foundation of faith for all.

From trials and Heaven’s hand: All of Israel saw that a shepherd boy and five stones were stronger than Goliath.

Ten plagues changed Pharaoh and prepared a people to trust Moses in crossing the Red Sea.

Lions yielded to a Holy Angel and Daniel’s life was preserved.

Ester saved her people.

Lazarus was raised.

The gold plates were obtained from Laban.

From Trials and Heaven -

Our sins were redeemed and the tomb was empty.

It has been such a blessing to have come here and to have been able to see God’s hand is over Italy; to know and experience again this good, good people.

Hurrah for Israel. Hurrah for Italy. Hurrah for Missions.

I just love the use of these little cobblestones! We find them almost everywhere we go.

This is the picture of the Piazza that is being restored. The Diodatos told us how much this town misses being able to gather here. Many are anxiously waiting for the restoration project to be completed.

It was an amazing trip and will be long remembered, especially in light of the Records Preservation on going and how that relates DIRECTLY to the work we have been called to the Rome Temple to do. I was going to tell you more--but this email has gotten L-O-N-G!! SO I'll close.

Ron said it best--it is a BLESSING TO BE HERE. HURRAH FOR ISRAEL!  HURRAH FOR  US ALL!!!

THE MARCO SIMONE GOLF OUTING (February 18, 2023)

We did take many pictures on that beautiful Saturday in February--so this Post will be about "sharing those pics" as a way of capturing that Memory of a Golf Outing with Bob Wright (whom Ron feels is one of the BEST Golfers he knows) and his wife, Penny and Ron and Carol.

Now some of you might be saying "Hey! I thought Mumfords were on a Mission--WHY this Post about a Golf Outing?? Well-it's kind of a big deal--since one of the Best Known Golf Tournaments--The Ryder Cup--will be played here, in Rome, Italy, just about 15 minutes from our apartment in September of 2023.  And since Bob and Penny came to see us--Anziano Ron thought maybe Bob would enjoy playing on the Course that he will no doubt watch on TV as it's played in September. AND that maybe he might remember some of the holes and their dificulty. so I will now just put up some picutres as the day unfolded for us. Ron and Bob were in one cart and Penny and Carol in the other--so we could visit and enjoy the beautiful day together. OH AND DID I TELL YOU JUST HOW BEAUTIFUL THE DAY WAS??

L0W 60s, beautiful azure blue sky--not a cloud in sight and very little wind.---IN FEBRUARY--THAT'S THE MOST AMAZING PART!!

FEBRUARY IS . . . GONE. . . and MARCH comes in like a LAMB (sorry Utah and Idaho)!!

I actually "owe" two emails--I have just been. . . .well, I just dislike that "I'm so busy" excuse, don't you? So--I'll just try to catch up with the Happenings here in Rome. First of all--
WE HAD VISITORS!! Our very first Visitors, Bob and Penny Wright, from Preston, Idaho, came on Wednesday, February 15th to spend a few days with us on their way to a 10-day Tour of Jordan and Israel.

                                                                                                IMG_1789.HEIC
Enjoying some Pizza di Napoli--with the Owner--who sang and danced for Ron

We enjoyed their visit so much! We even ventured out to the Airport to pick them up. Wow--they had a lot of luggage--but even more Wow--they had an extra piece of luggage so they could bring us some "stuff" from home. (According to Missy--it was "a lotta of stuff"!!) AND WE SO APPRECIATED IT! BUT-- no more talk about luggage. We are just glad our little Corolla had a place for it all!  After we packed them all in the car--and got back on the Freeway to drive to our apartment--the sound of the something is not right inside the car  alarm going off and no amount of driving or re-closing doors was going to help. THEN--Bob (or was it Penny?) thought to connect the middle seatbelt in the back seat--where 2 large bags of luggage had been put for the ride home. BINGO--THAT WAS IT!!  AS long as that seatbelt was fastened we were ON OUR WAY! It was really our first trip on the Autostrada--European Freeways--AND they do travel FAST!!
Like I said we did enjoy our Visitors--hoping they had a great time too. Only 3 full days in Rome--hardly seems enough to see much in Downtown, Rome Temple visit besides throwing in a GOLF OUTING to the Marco Simone Golf Course--Home for the 2023 RYDER CUP COMPETITION! Yep!! Another Dream Come True for Anziano Mumford!  And what a beautiful Saturday it turned out to be!!  Now for those who are not Golfers, let me (with my notes from Ron) tell you about the Ryder Cup, so you can maybe see why this is such a BIG DEAL.  THIS GOLF TOURNAMENT is hosted every year--back and forth between America and Europe. Those in charge of the planning of this Golf Competition choose a Golf Course to Host and then a Committee (or such) chooses a TEAM of 12 GOLFERS from Each area --USA vs EUROPE. It is held at the end of the Golf season--so these Golfers are chosen as to how well their Season has gone. They are surely among the very top as you can imagine with COUNTRY PRIDE riding on the waves🌊🌊 (Atlantic, that is). There is a huge Trophy that brings "bragging rights" back to the Winning Country or Continent. So--Marco Simone Golf Course, I find out after we have been in Italy for about 3 weeks,--not only is it the HOST GOLF COURSE--but it is within 15-20 minutes from our apartment!!  Cielo (heaven), Ron's in Cielo. So we drive out to check it out  and see if there is a VOLUNTEER LIST that Ron could get his name on. Well, it is a Private Course and yes, the Volunteers have ALL BEEN PROCURED. BUT HE LEFT HIS CONTACT INFO--JUST IN CASE.
So, he did find out that even though the Course is Private--they are happy to take a non-member's (of the Golf Course, that is) money to play a Round of golf. And that's how Ron and Bob were able to Golf 18-holes on this quite challenging course on Saturday, February 18TH, 2023 in the countryside of Rome. Ron and I traded shifts with another couple--and then they came in 'early' to relieve us--so we could swing by our apartment and pick up Bob and Penny and travel out to the Course for a 12:10 Tee-Time. We had to rent clubs, a cart for both couples plus green fees. Not cheap--BUT OH THE MEMORIES!! Like I said, a beautiful day--low 60s, almost no wind and not a cloud in the sky.

I have so many photos of that amazing Golf Outing--you'll have to check my Blog for those cherished shots!! WE did make that memory and finished just as the sun was setting (It gets dark earlier here).

So the Wrights left on Sunday Feb 19th, 2023--heading for Amman, Jordan and the start of a very rigorous 10-day tour. Good thing they are in shape. We so enjoyed the time they came and spent in the Rome Temple and time at the Visitor's Center while we did our Temple shift. Wonderful day.

Turns out that February was a month of "gearing up" to say more Good Byes--to not 1, but 2 Senior Missionary Couples. Lyle and Susanne Anderson from Monticello, Utah and Eric and Loree Thorderson from Gilbert, Arizona.  These 2 couples are some of the first Couples called to the Rome Temple Mission after the Temple opened in March of 2019. They got here--the Thordersons first and then the Andersons. Served for a short time (well, not so short for the Thordersons--they served in the Temple Baptistry for a YEAR) and then Covid-19 hit with a vengeance in Italy and they were sent home. After a year or so--when the Temple was barely reopening--they were called to Return. Both Couples served "more than the 18-months of a normal Mission. It turns out that the THORDERSONS  ended up serving 28 months--but not continuous. Sorella Thorderson said in her parting words to us at their "Arrivederci Party" this past Wednesday, March 1, 2023, that her children (they have 4 girls) were starting to feel like maybe the Thordersons "loved the Italians more than them--they had been gone so long. "  Yes--it's probably time to Return Home.

THE ANDERSONS were "celebrated" a few weeks ago--and then they have had family visiting for 2 weeks. So they also departed this week. They will ALL be sorely missed.  Both of the Anzianos served here as young men and their command of the language returned very well. And both Sorellas have worked so hard to become conversant in Italian and the Italians loved them for that effort!! They are like the glue that really kept things running and were often seen at the temple during extra shifts to make schedules work and see how best to solve some problems that our Temple President Toronto had no experience with. WE HAVE ONE EXPERIENCED SENIOR COUPLE LEFT--THE LEES. (Who will depart in early June of this year). That will leave 6 Senior Couples left here to serve in the Rome Temple---newbies for sure--the range of service from 6 months to 1 day, with 1 more Couple arriving in 10 days. We are on "High Alert" to RUN FASTER and JUMP HIGHER!! Missions are great--but saying Good Bye to those that you serve with 5 days a week --6 hours each day--is REALLY HARD.
I admire these Companionships so much for the Trails they have blazed and the legacy they leave.  Both Couples really wanted to gather a record of "Conversion Stories" of the italian Saints--but especially Anziano Thorderson. So he started looking in the records and approaching these wonderful Italian Saints about either writing their stories or agreeing to an Interview where the story of their Conversion was told and then typed up to be added to a huge book that is being kept at the Visitor's Center. There is also a website where Local Italians take turns reading the Book of Mormon so those of us who are attempting to read and study it--can hear the words pronounced correctly as we listen and follow along. Wonderful idea!
The weather in Rome has really started to warm and the Italians say that "Primavera" (or Spring) is just around the corner. And Spring begins the big Rush of Visitors to Rome and to the Temple and Visitor's Center. We are so excited for this--as this past few weeks we have had large groups of Single Adults (not YSA--but SA--over 30 yrs of age), come down from Milan and surrounding areas to participate in all Ordinances at the Temple.  Two Endowment Sessions were full to the max of 64 (and that with extra chairs brought in) and Sealings were busy with all 3 Sealing Rooms going and over 15 people in each. The Baptistry was maxed out all morning on the 2 days this Group of SA was here.  Ron met their "Organizer" and boy! was she organized! She cares about this Program and wanted as many to participate as could and it was planned and carried out with perfection. It is so thrilling to see the Temple full of Patrons and the lavoranti (Ordinance workers) working and accomplishing the Lord's work insieme (together).
Well that's going to do it for this email--but i already have 1 or 2 others "forming in my head"--so there is much to tell you about.  It is beautiful here but our prayers are for you that have had so much snow in Utah and Idaho.  We pray the snows will melt slowly and THAT FLOODING WILL BE KEPT TO A MINIMUM. We know that this winter has been a real blessing for these areas---and therefore, our complaints should be kept to a minimum--but also that much snow and cold temps create their own problems, too. So we send our love and support to you all at this time!
With ðŸ’–💗💞 from Rome,
Sorella and Anziano Mumford
HURRAH FOR ISRAEL!   HURRAH!!
